MINOR METALLURGY OF UKRAINE AS A PERSPECTIVE DIRECTION FOR FURTHER INDUSTRIES DEVELOPMENT

Metallurgy of Ukraine is a basic sector of the economy, which provides more than 25 % of industrial production. Ukraine is one of the leading producers of steel in the world and ranks 7th in terms of steel production and 3rd place – in terms of exports of steel products. Over 80 % of steel exported to Europe, Asia, Middle East, and South America.

Given the importance of metallurgy for Ukraine’s economy is worth notice that in 2013, over the past 11 months, industry figures were down 3.4 %. Indicators smelting crude steel this year decreased even lower. Downward trend observed not only in Ukraine. One of the main reasons for productions decline is general downturn in the U.S. and Europe as well as the weakness of the domestic market and debt. In these market conditions, minor metallurgy was considered as a main prospective, which is organized into major engineering companies specializing in steel smelting and rolling. According to experts, large processing plants don’t follow the order fulfillment, and thus suffer losses due to insufficient workload. In turn, the steel industry was quickly responds to market challenges, rearranged to produce products that are in demand, requiring fewer resources and energy, has the ability to execute small orders and often located in close proximity to consumers.

The global mini-steel industry has been actively developing for more than four decades, with a number of significant advantages over the large factories:

– Fast response to changing demand for different types of products (from raw material preparation to rolling marketable products on a mini-factory is 10–16 hours, while the large steel plant – from a half to three days.

– Ability to perform small orders for a particular customer.

– Lower resource and energy consumption of own production, which makes them more cost-effective compared to a complete cycle of steelmaking.

– Lack of technological chain of harmful intermediate redistribution as the preparation of coal and iron ore, furnace and coke production, can achieve higher environmental performance.

– Relatively low cost and less time spent on the construction of steel mini-plant [1].

In today’s world there are more than a thousand steel mini-mills of various modifications and performance.

Paradoxically, the Ukraine, having all opportunities for mini-industry development, far behind the global trends – mini-plants while giving less than 5 % of the output of steel in the country. Its development in Ukraine starts since 1999 when the first mini Steel Plant JSC «MMP» ISTIL was build. In 2009 a list of Ukrainian mini-mills joins an updated plant «AzovElektroStal». Finally, in October 2012, last existing in Ukraine «mini -mills» were officially launched and the largest among them – arc complex «INTERPIPE Steel» with capacity of 1.32 million tons of steel per year. It was built on the industrial site of «NTRP» in the group «Interpipe» to replace outdated open-hearth furnaces and provision of pipe and wheel manufactures its own steel workpiece.

In the future, there are several construction projects mini-plants in Ukraine which are under negotiation. One of the projects can be a real building in 2014 Bilotserkivskyi electric plant, which has been trying to implement company «Euro Finance» for a huge period [2].

Data to assess the future prospects of metallurgy in Ukraine more or less positive. Experts predict a rise in demand for Steel products. Also price stabilization is expected. As a further vector development, Ukraine must choose exactly reforming small industry, and replenish the arsenal of business expansion. This will improve the competitiveness of the industry and will ensure rapid economic development of Ukraine for the long run.
